Welcome TBN's new board members, and thank the old

We're saying goodbye to some old faces, and welcoming some new members to the TBN board, which was elected at the annual meeting and dinner dance last weekend. Here's the new line-up.

  • President: John Clausen
  • Secretary: Pam Kraft
  • Treasurers: Jean Dell’Agnese/ Veda Ko
  • Communications:  Rick MacMillan
  • Overnight Trips: Lora Flanagan
  • Member Experience: Mary Newman
  • Technical: Martin Lansche/Dave Mader
  • Social: Carole Sovran
  • Touring: Richard Anstett

We'll have a picture of the board in a future edition of Chain of Events. For now, here's a picture of the dance itself along with TBN's thanks to all the board members who stepped down this year.

See the TBN website for more details of the discussions at the meeting.

Tony Lau: TBN's volunteer of the year

Tony Lau is TBN's volunteer of the year, as thanks for his multi-year contributions to Cyclon and to TNTO, two of TBN's flagship events. And thanks, of course, to all the other volunteers who help make TBN great: as well as the outgoing members of the TBN board, that includes the winners of TBN's season-long member of the month awards, all the organizers of our out-of-town adventures and the many other helpers at Cyclon and TNTO. We couldn't run the club without you.

Spin your way to fitness with TBN

TBN's popular series of winter spin programs starts this week, so sign up now for weekly sessions to keep yourself in shape for when the cycling season starts again. The sessions, using state-of-the-art Stages cycling techniques, are carefully designed by instructor Carmen Dieges to maximize benefits from the workout. They take place at the Adelaide Club in downtown Toronto. Have fun, and stay fit. See the TBN website for more details.

Skating coming soon

The first skating evening of the 2019-20 season takes place on November 29 at the Harbourfront Centre on Queens Quay. We'll skate for about 90 minutes, starting at 6:30 pm, and then head to a nearby restaurant for refreshment. Come check us out. More details on the website.

October member of the month

Chris Siebenmann is TBN's member of the month for October. Chris leads many weekend rides and coordinates the Sunday Urban Roller adventures, making sure a large group stays together and offering detailed and informative pre-ride talks. A bicycle commuter, he's also the go-to person if someone has mechanical problems on a ride -- a welcome skill that's appreciated by many of his fellow riders.

Reminders

Walk (or hike) into winter

TBN's city walks and country hikes will continue while the weather cooperates. Check the website for details. The city walks are listed here, and the country hikes are  here.

Bike rides for the brave

TBN's late season rides will continue while the weather cooperates. But please check the website (and the weather forecast) before you head out. Rides will be cancelled if conditions are not favourable.

Volunteer positions

Education Director. An active member of the TBN board, you will plan and implement education sessions on matters such as safety, hill climbing, travel issues. Time commitment will depend on your schedule for seminars and training, plus regular board meetings.

Please contact President John Clausen if you can help, or if you have questions about these positions.

TNTO coordinator(s). We need a new team of volunteers to run the iconic TNTO weekend, a mid-June adventure to Niagara Falls and back (long and short routes available). The new team will also reset the 26-year-old program. Our recent home, The Rodeway Inn, was sold last year and prices jumped by 20 percent.

Contact weekendtrips@tbn.ca if you can help. The previous team of Tony Lau, Carole Sovran and Ian Rankin will be happy to provide background and advice.

Social Media specialist. TBN's Communications committee is seeking a new team member who is intimately acquainted with the technical aspects of social media tools, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Please contact publicity@tbn.ca if you are interested.

Buying at a discount

Many bike stores in the Toronto area offer hefty discounts for TBN members, as do a number of bicycle related services. Check the website for the full list.

As always, check the TBN website for details of all rides and other events, and remember to check back a couple of hours before a ride in case it's changed or cancelled because of poor weather or other factors beyond our control.

Remember to visit the TBN calendar of events to find out more about what's coming up. That little TTC logo below will help alert you to any subway closures.
