TBN working on ride restarts

TBN rides remain cancelled into July but we plan to restart some operations soon, now that Toronto and Peel regions have moved to the second stage of COVID-19 restrictions. We'll put full details on the TBN website, and give you the likely start dates for our 2020 ride program. Leading up to that, the TBN board is in the midst of approving a revised waiver form and new safety guidelines, incorporating feedback from program coordinators. We will also offer online training sessions for ride leaders and program coordinators on implementing these changes.

We look forward to seeing you on a ride soon.

Join Martin Lansche on our special virtual education session on how to work with RideWithGPS, the app/website where TBN stores its extensive collection of city and country routes. Martin will offer clues on whether you should use the free version of RideWithGPS or pay for an upgrade, explain how to find a TBN route, demonstrate how to download a route to your smartphone or bike computer, and discuss how to navigate your ride. You'll also get tips, and help with troubleshooting. This session is designed for users who are new to RideWithGPS: it will not cover advanced topics like route creation, organization and maintenance. Details coming soon to the Education section of the website.

TBN routes: one of our most prized assets

You asked for a library of TBN routes. We listened.

A new work-in-progress page on the TBN website offers a convenient way to find some of our routes, with links to rides mapped through RideWithGPS. We have over 1,000 routes in total, including many duplicates and obsolete routes, so this will become an easier way to find a specific ride than by backtracking to RideWithGPS in our online Calendar. Check it out.

TBN has a Strava club

Starting this week, we will be cleaning up the membership in the Strava TBN club, removing Strava members who are not members of the real world TBN club. That means the Strava leaderboards will reflect our current membership, and not the hundreds of non-TBN members who are there currently. To join the club, click here and press "Request to join".

Strava links with services like RideWithGPS and Garmin Direct and offers a way to track you speed and mileage. It has two levels of membership, depending on whether or not you want to pay for premium services.

Join us for our next virtual movie night

Please join us for our next movie night, scheduled for July 29. This time we chat about Stop at Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story.

Check the TBN homepage for details on this and future movie nights, where we watch movies and discuss them afterward. We also have occasional virtual travelogues, inviting TBN members to host presentations, with photos, on travel by bike. Email Lora at weekendtrips@tbn.ca if you would like to deliver a travelogue, or you have suggestions for movies we could watch.

The movie nights and virtual travelogue presentations use Zoom, a free and easy-to-use video call app where you can see and hear other participants on the call.

Camping trips cancelled for this year

TBN's planned 2020 camping trips are cancelled because Parks Ontario is not yet able to open up the group campsites we planned to use. Camping trip organizers Paul Price and Brenda Sweet apologize for the inconvenience, and promise to be back with a new camping/cycling program next year.

Reminders

TBN's summer trips are cancelled because of COVID-19, and later trips will depend on how the situation evolves.  Please monitor the TBN website and Facebook for more details.

Explore Toronto's newest cycle routes

During the COVID-19 crisis, Toronto is letting runners, walkers and cyclists take over three major downtown streets on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as opening several temporary bike routes across the city. Highlights include traffic-free sections of Lakeshore West and Lakeshore East on the weekends, plus new, separated bike lanes on University Avenue and on parts of Dundas Street. Bloor Street and Danforth Avenue are next on the agenda.

Give them a try.

Join TBN's virtual city walks

TBN offers virtual city walks at 10 am on Sundays, where we meet by Zoom video conference and use Google Maps and Google Street View to explore Toronto and beyond. We stop to look at interesting things we pass: buildings, sculptures, historic locations, etc.

Please email to citywalks@tbn.ca to join the City Walks email list and receive the link to join the conference (probably by Saturday evening).

Yoga Virtually

Yoga is one of the best cross-training activities for cyclists and it has a number of health benefits. If there is enough interest, Lora Flanagan, a soon to be certified Yoga Teacher, will offer Yoga classes using Zoom or perhaps in local parks (in small groups, with proper physical distancing). There will be no charge for TBN members.

If you are interested, please email Lora at weekendtrips@tbn.ca.

TBN membership to be extended

TBN is working on a way to extend all non-lapsed member renewal dates based on the length of time that our season is delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. In other words we will add days to your next renewal date after you pay for your 2020 renewal. Since we don't yet know when the lockdown will be lifted, you must renew your membership when it expires so that your membership does not lapse.
