CAN-BIKE Level 4 Practical CLass

Background

TBN is offering a CAN-BIKE LEVEL 4 Course on March 24th, 25th and 26th 2023. It will be run by TBN member Joey Schwartz, who is a certified CAN-BIKE instructor. The entire course will be offered over 3 days: Friday evening: theory, then Saturday and Sunday in person, on-the-bike training, followed by a certification test. The entire 3 days course, with testing, will be limited to 12 attendees, and will only be open to Ride Leaders and Program Coordinators. We are asking the Program Coordinators to nominate attendees.  If there is sufficient demand, we may schedule additional training.

Practical Class

We are  limiting attendance for the Saturday/Sunday Practical Class to 12 attendees.

Pre-requisites

Riders must

  1. have completed the CAN-BIKE LEVEL 4 Theory Class (Zoom)
  2. be capable of riding distances of up to 25 km, at a speed no slower than 15 km/h. Typically, the rides are at a 16 to 18 km/h pace with maybe 20 km/h as the high. These are essentially high-end Leisure Wheeler or regular Urban Roller speeds and distances.
  3. be riding a bike that meets Ontario Highway Traffic Act standards. This includes having gears, working brakes, and red reflective tape 250 mm long by 25 mm on each rear chain stay, and white reflective tape 250 mm long by 25 mm wide on each front fork. The reflective safety tape is required under Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) Section 62 (17). Canadian Tire sells the white reflective safety tape and the red reflective safety tape for $14.00 each. Each is enough for two bicycles.

Any riders that prove to be indecisive, have bad judgment, etc. on the road, will be automatically failed and will be told to go home. Any rider whose bike does not meet the HTA standards will also be automatically failed, and told to go home.

On Sunday, a long ride will occur in the morning simulating both urban and country riding. After a one-hour lunch, we’ll start testing skills. We’ll then go on the test ride. We come back from the ride to an IN-PERSON class where there will be an over-view. The test will be administered in-person, proctored by Joey, and will be a written theory test with a time-limit of one-hour.

Note that lunch will be provided both days by TBN.
