City Walk - Four Friends Walk

  • 10 Feb 2019
  • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Union Station, Food Court, lower level

For Sunday, February 10, meet at 10 AM in the Food Court in the new lower retail level of Union Station. We will do a 12 Km walk to see two sites relating to the four friends who are buried together at Prospect Cemetery.

We will first walk to 280 Queen West to see where the Society of Carptho-Russian Canadians held many of their events, then walk to Prospect Cemetery. Unlike most other City Walks, this walk will not end at a subway station, but instead will end on the St Clair streetcar line. Coffee and bathrooms are available at the beginning, middle and end of the walk, and there is one additional bathroom break. We will end at Caledonia Bakery, which does not have a full menu, but has coffee and pastries (although there are other restaurants nearby, but I am not familiar with any of them).

The approximate distances to points of interest and break locations are:

  • 0.0 Km - Union Station (Tim Hortons, McDonalds, bathrooms)
  • 1.4 Km - 280 Queen West
  • 5.6 Km - Dufferin Mall (coffee/bathrooms)
  • 7.0 Km - Bloor St (early exit to Lansdowne or Dufferin Station)
  • 9.0 Km - Joseph Picininni Community Centre (bathrooms)
  • 10.5 Km - Prospect Cemetery
  • 12.0 Km - Caledonia Bakery (snack/bathrooms)
  • 12.0 Km - end of walk on St Clair streetcar line

We will not be near the subway for most of the walk, but there will be access to buses or streetcars at some major intersections. We will mostly be on city streets, but we will be walking through some parks that have unpaved paths, so light hiking shoes or boots suitable for the weather conditions would be appropriate.

There is currently a scheduled subway closure this weekend from St Clair to Lawrence in case this affects your travel plans to or from the walk. However, please check https://www.ttc.ca/Service_Advisories/Subway_closures/index.jsp for any changes.

The planned route is available on Ride With GPS at:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29290985

Information on the four friends is available on the Toronto Star website at: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2019/01/05/the-golden-girls-of-prospect-cemetery.html

Non-members are welcome. This is an official TBN event, so they will be asked to sign the waiver form, but, like all winter walks, will not be charged the non-member fee.

If you have trouble finding us at the start, please call me on my cell at 416-917-8866. If I don't answer, try again, as I may miss the first call.
