City Walk - Mark Brousseau Memorial Walk

  • 16 Dec 2018
  • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Christie Subway Station

Meet at 10 AM at Christie Station at street level near the ticket booth.

For this year’s Mark Brousseau Memorial Walk, I thought it would be interesting to recreate a walk from what I believe was the first season of City Walks. Mark Brousseau and Howard Chan started the City Walk program in 1998. We will follow “Mark’s Historical Hike”, from December 13, 1998, which is based on the City of Toronto Garrison Creek Discovery Walk. You can download your own copy of the Discovery Walk from https://www.toronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/9a94-Discovery-Walk-Garrison-Creek-route-map.pdf.

For the first half of the walk we will follow the course of this completely buried stream to near where it entered Lake Ontario, close to Fort York (The Garrison).

For the second half of the walk, since Mark’s original map does not indicate where it went, I have added a visit to Ireland Park, then a return to Christie Station, via mostly smaller residential streets.

This walk is a loop and we will be returning to the start at Christie Station. Total Distance will be about 10.5 Km. There will be two coffee/bathroom breaks (at 2.2 and 6.2 KM). There will be several convenient drop-outs to bus or streetcar available (at 4, 7, 8, and 9 Km). This walk will be entirely on city streets, so shoes or boots suitable for the weather would be appropriate.

Near the end, possible stops for lunch include Monarch Tavern (if it is open when we arrive), or any of many establishments on Bloor near Christie, including Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu, Mom's Korean Food, Kinton Ramen, Tim Hortons, or Clinton's bar.

Note the scheduled subway closure this weekend has been cancelled, as this may affect your travel plans. Please check https://www.ttc.ca/Service_Advisories/Subway_closures/index.jsp for any changes or cancellations.

This is an official TBN event. Non-members will be required to sign the waiver form and pay the $5 non-member fee.

For the second half of the walk, since Mark’s original map does not indicate where it went, I have added a visit to historic Fort Rouille and Scadding Cabin (which we missed seeing earlier this spring) and then a return to Christie Station, via mostly smaller residential streets.

Total Distance will be about 11.5 Km, with several drop-outs to bus or streetcar available. There will be a couple of bathroom stops, one of which will also be a coffee break. This walk will be entirely on city streets, so shoes or boots suitable for the weather would be appropriate.

Note there is a scheduled subway closure this weekend between Lawrence and St Clair stations, which may affect your travel plans. Please check https://www.ttc.ca/Service_Advisories/Subway_closures/index.jsp for any changes or cancellations.
