Discovering Pelee

Camping and Cycling Weekend

September 4 - 7, 2015

Registration opens Saturday, June 20

Join us on the Labour Day long weekend for cycling in “Canada’s sunparlour,” the agricultural, fruit, vegetable, and wine region located on the north shore of Lake Erie in the Leamington and Pelee areas.

We will be camping for three nights at a beautiful quiet group site at Wheatley Provincial Park, a 3.5 hour drive from Toronto.  Showers and flush toilets are located off site a short walk away; outhouses are on the site.

Itinerary:

Friday—setting up camp.

Saturday—cycling to Point Pelee National Park.  Rides of 57, 80, 97 km with flat terrain.  Highlights are the Marsh Boardwalk, beaches, and “the tip”, the most southern point of mainland Canada.  Point Pelee is renowned for bird watching as it is on a migration corridor.

We will have a campsite dinner where grilled chicken will be provided; accompaniments will be potluck. Local wines will be provided.

Sunday—excursion to Pelee Island.  All aboard the MV Jimaan, ferry departing from Kingsville.  After cruising for 1.5 hrs. in complete comfort we will explore Pelee Island at our leisure.  There is a mix of mostly paved roads with some hard packed gravel.  Expect to ride 40 km or less.  The island is an oasis of tranquility, yet there is enough to see and do.  When we leave the ferry we will have dinner in Kingsville at a wonderful reasonably priced Italian restaurant (optional).

There will be alternate routes on the mainland for those who prefer not to go to the island.

Monday—optional short ride to Hillman Marsh Conservation area.

Registration: The last day for registration is Wednesday, September 2, 2015.  When you register, you will receive a confirmation email with an attachment providing an itinerary and some extra information.
