Gord's message: Celebrating Cyclon

I would like to personally thank RJ, Mireille and the whole Cyclon committee for an outstanding job at Cyclon 2022. The venue at Western was wonderful, the food was delicious, the rides were interesting and even the weather was great. A memorable weekend all around. I hope that next year we can open the event up to larger numbers so more of you can appreciate Cyclon at Western, where we will return in 2023.

As you may have heard, RJ, Mireille and Tony Lau are retiring from the Cyclon committee. I want to thank them for their tremendous contribution to Cyclon over the years and I wish them well in whatever comes next. And I hope we'll still see them out on rides.

Of course that means that TBN will be looking for some new members for the Cyclon committee. Please consider volunteering to help make Cyclon 2023 even better than 2022.

Gord Irish, President

Cyclon: Help us ensure it continues

Thank you to everyone who came to Cyclon 2022 this year. It was wonderful to catch up with everyone after a two-year hiatus due to COVID. We hope you enjoyed the great rides, Western accommodations, and scenery London provided.

Here is a link to Cyclon 2022's Google photos album.

Soon we will need to start planning for Cyclon 2023, again in London, and more importantly, identify a new venue for Cyclon 2024. However, this cannot be done without more volunteers. With a collective 18 years of service on the Cyclon committee, Mireille Macia, Tony Lau and I will be stepping down after next year. Cyclon 2023 will be a transition year, where we look to build on the success of Cyclon 2022 and help train and advise new committee chair(s) and route planner(s) to take over and run future Cyclons.

If you have an idea for a new Cyclon location, want to meet more people from the club, love riding in new locations, and/or have an interest in event management, consider joining the Cyclon committee; we would love to hear from you. To learn more about what is involved or to express your interest in joining the committee please contact us at cyclon@tbn.ca before January 2023 when the new planning cycle begins.

Cyclon, after 33 years, remains TBN’s premier event. Please help ensure it continues.

For those of you who were able to attend Cyclon this year, please do not forget to complete the survey so we have feedback for next year. To qualify to win a $25 gift certificate, survey responses must be received by Aug. 31.

On behalf of the entire Cyclon Planning Committee, we look forward to seeing you in London in 2023.

RJ Petersen, Cyclon committee chair

Touring Director seeks your input

TBN Touring Director Dennis Szilvasy is looking for three or four members of the club to join him in a review of the TBN volunteer rewards program. He would like to review various new ideas. The time commitment would involve a couple of Zoom meetings. If you are interested in helping with this task please contact Dennis at touring@tbn.ca.

On another matter, Dennis will be overseeing a Tour Leader Workshop and Discussion event, Sept. 11 beginning at 7 pm. This Zoom meeting will be open to program coordinators, ride leaders and anyone who has helped on rides. TBN would like to hear about any issues regarding rides and suggestions for new ways of organizing them. We need broader feedback from the volunteers who actually do the organizing.

To sign up, visit the calendar at tbn.ca.

Update from the Technical Director

Based on a suggestion from a ride leader, the "Get List of Registrants for Upcoming Event" application used by ride leaders has been enhanced. Now, when you view the list of registrants there are checkboxes next to each registrant's name. If you are using a printout, you can check each box when people show up. If you are using your phone, you can click the check box on the phone. This does not record attendance, but some Ride Leaders may find this useful to keep track of who has shown up at the start of a ride. See screenshot sample below.

TBN's annual picnic rescheduled

Due to a new policy on park permits within the City of Markham we have learned that barbecues are not allowed at our usual location, Toogood Pond. As a result, we have secured Milliken Park in Scarborough, about 8 km SE of Toogood. However, due to the late request the only available date is Sept. 18.

This is a large, beautiful park with several covered picnic table areas that should perfectly suit our needs. As Paul and Brenda will be away at this time, we will be having a small variety of sandwiches/wraps, including a vegan option. Registration for rides/food will be up on the TBN website soon.

Stay tuned or watch the website for more information.

Volunteer at the Revolution Ride for ALS Canada

Volunteer to support ALS Canada at the Revolution Ride in Dundas, Ont. This event takes place on Sept. 25 from approximately 7 am to 3 pm. Volunteers will receive breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt. Click here for more information or contact Lora Flanagan, weekendtrips@tbn.caThe deadline to sign up is Sept. 4.

Complimentary Membership Policy

There have been a number of questions posed to board members recently about TBN's policy/process for awarding complimentary membership to our active volunteers. We have been following a policy/process within the board since at least 2018 (with a few very minor changes in the intervening years), but it has not been formally shared with the club membership until now. Need to cancel a registration for an event?

We have tried to clear up the process for cancelling your event registrations. We have updated the How to Cancel my Event Registration page on the website. The links in each event now show

for registered users. See the web page for more details.

Reminders

Event Registration: Please remember to Login to the TBN website prior to registering for our Events. If you are not logged in, the system does not know who you are, and will only offer you the Guest Rider registration choice. Also, when you are logged into the TBN website, a lot of members-only content appears.
