  When you’re young you can get away with playing sports to keep fit,” says Dr. Raza Awan, the medical director of Synergy Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.    “But when you’re older, you have to keep fit in order to play sports.” (Toronto Star, April 30, 2013)

This education event will be of interest to the TBN "Wounded Warriors" and to those who want to learn how to avoid injuries. At the talk, you will

1)   Become familiar with the most common overuse injuries affecting cyclists

2)   Learn strategies to reduce the risk of overuse injuries

3)   Learn practical exercises via live demonstrations

BIOS:

Dr Raza Awan, Sports Medicine Physician:

Dr. Awan is the Medical Director and Co-Founder of Synergy Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, a multidisciplinary clinic with an innovative rehabilitation model. He graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine in 1995, and subsequently completed his residency training in Rehabilitation Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. After completing his Residency training, Dr. Awan completed an additional fellowship year in Sports Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

He holds the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine Diploma, and has been working as a Sports Medicine Physician in Toronto for the past 14 years. Dr. Awan is on staff at St Michael’s Hospital, trains medical students and residents, and is a lecturer at the University of Toronto. He treats athletes of all ability levels ranging from professional athletes to weekend warriors, is a consultant for the NHL Players Association, and has provided medical coverage for national and international sporting events.

Dr. Awan created the Synergy “Keep Your Game On Injury Prevention Series” to educate patients on injury prevention. Synergy has run injury prevention seminars on a variety of sports and activities including running, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and yoga.  Dr. Awan has been interviewed on injury prevention and sports injuries by the Toronto Star, CBC National News, Flare magazine, and The National Post.

Lauren Dyck, Registered Physiotherapist:

Lauren completed her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at McMaster University in 2009, where she gained comprehensive knowledge in anatomy, exercise physiology, and biomechanics.  In 2008 and 2009, Lauren became the head Sports Medicine therapist of the McMaster Men’s Volleyball team and was able to refine her on-site management skills and educate athletes on injury prevention. She also accompanied the team to Edmonton, Alberta where they competed in the National CIS Championships.

Lauren completed her Master’s degree in Physiotherapy from the

Universityof Toronto in 2011, and graduated as class Valedictorian. Dedicated to furthering her manual and manipulative skills, Lauren is presently working towards her Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy, and is also a certified Level 1 and 2 Kinesiotape provider.

Lauren’s primary area of interest and sub specialization is the  treatment of Endurance Athletes, including cyclists, runners, and triathletes. Being a well-rounded athlete herself, Lauren has played on high-level women’s softball and volleyball teams, and competed in duathlons, triathlons, and half-marathons. She is currently training for a Half-Ironman
