MapArt

Toronto with Bicycle Routes

Publisher: MapArt
Cost $3.95
Availability: wide, better bookstores, variety stores and bike shops
Coverage: entire new City of Toronto (formerly Metro)
Timeliness: hasn't been updated since 1998
Comments: a good all-purpose map complete with street index and all one-way streets indicated with the added bonus of recommended on-street bike routes and the usual offroad, paved recreational trails. Bike lanes, routes and trails built since 1998 aren't included, which is a significant deficiency.

Toronto Cycling Map 2005

Toronto Cycling Map

Publisher: City of Toronto
Cost: Free
Availability: Metro Hall, City Hall, Community Centres, Civic Centres
Coverage: entire new City of Toronto (formerly Metro)
Timeliness: Published in April 2007, the base map information is current as of Jan. 2006 and replaces the last revision, published in March 2006.
Comments: Best price performance ratio: the widest area of coverage at no cost. Details offroad recreational trails, walking trails, designated bike lanes, signed bike routes and suggested on street routes (great for commuters). More information is available at the Toronto Cycling Map webpage including downloadable versions in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. One glaring omission: TBN's web site URL was dropped from the map in 2006 and is still AWOL in 2007. Not cool.

Mississauga Trails

Timeliness: Published February 2006
Comments: Includes six rural cycling loop maps from 21 to 55 km in length rated from Easy to Hilly. Regional map indicates road conditions (including unpaved/gravel!), suggested routes, bike lanes, bike trails, steep hills and places to exercise extra caution (the site of this reviewer's accident 12 years ago is clearly marked!)

Tour Green Toronto Map

Tour Green Toronto Map

Publisher: Green Tourism Association
Cost: Free
Availability: Online Version. A full list of locations is available here.
Coverage: entire City of Toronto (formerly Metro)
Timeliness: reissued April 2005.
Comments: Not just a map but a promotional tool for green tourism industries in Toronto based on the greenmap concept. Has a lot of interesting information about Toronto's environmental history. On street and offroad bike routes are indicated, however most streetnames are omitted so finding trailheads could be an adventure! Still, a worthy project. More information can be found at the www.greentourism.ca website.

Golden Horseshoe Recreation Map

Golden Horseshoe Recreation Map

Publisher: Advermap/OCA
Cost: varies from free to $5.50 depending on vendor.
Availability: bike shops. Other maps in this series are available online through the Federal Publications web site.
Coverage: South Central Ontario from Newcastle to Waterloo and Gravenhurst to Port Dover, entire Niagara peninsula (Map 2 in the Ontario Recreational Map Series). Includes offroad trails, bike routes, TransCanada Trail, Bruce Trail, rail trails and suggested cycling loops.
Timeliness: 3rd edition, published early 2003,
Comments: large, easy to read format. Most road names included. Suggested cycling loops for daytrippers marked and described in accompanying text. Some bike store locations indicated. A bit out of date already and some of the routes indicated aren't the best available, but this is probably more a result of trying to accomplish so many things with one map.
