Mountain Biking/Trail Riding

by Dan Roitner, TBN Mountain Biking Co-Coordinator

Trail Riders - Mountain biking on single track trails and forest dirt roads mainly outside of the city for ~20km. Difficulty ranges from beginner to advanced

Upcoming Trail Rides:
Sat-Sep-11: Hardwood Hills

Welcome to the world of Mountain Biking, or as we call it, Trail Riding. On TBN club rides you can enjoy zig-zagging through the woods with no cars in sight! The air is clean, the trails are sheltered, you may even see deer; just don’t daydream as the challenges keep coming. Logs, rocks, mud, sand, gravel, hills and sometimes even snow keep you at the top of your game while getting fit and making a few friends. After the ride, visit an après food spot together for a bite.

Don ride_14.JPG Who are we? Bikers are a mix of men and women, mainly in their thirties and forties, who love to MTB ride. A non-competitive lot, we stick together for safety and possible repair problems. New riders-especially women-looking for an exciting challenge, are encouraged to come out and give Trail Riding with TBN a try! In a friendly, non-competitive club atmosphere, the more experienced riders will extend a warm welcome, pass on tips and strategies, and help introduce you to this great outdoor sport. The average size of a group is around 15 bikers; at which point the leader may wish to split into a faster and slower group. Please ride within your physical capabilities.

Where do we ride? Weekly rides on Saturday and/or Sunday are usually within an hour’s drive of Toronto. Some Advanced rides are farther away (cause they are worth it). The ride locations span across the top of Toronto in woodlots that are usually free. Morning rides typically start at 10 a.m., go for 2 to 3 hours and cover about 20 km. Seem short? Not when it winds and climbs!

Or join one of two weekday rides in the Don Valley at 6:00 p.m. Wed. Experienced, Thurs. Beginner.

What do I need to join? Anyone can join, but please have the right gear, a good mountain bike (we do not repair bikes) and be physically fit enough to keep up. Riders under 18 years old must be with a parent or guardian on the trail. Join the beginner "Knobby Newbie" ride to help get acquainted. Already a TBN member? Show us your card. Guests ride for $5 bucks anytime.

Bring lots of water, snack bars, and wear layered clothing, (you should be a bit chilled before you start). Also recommended are high socks for possible poison ivy (shin guards), clear/yellow safety glasses, and gloves. A helmet is mandatory on all TBN rides. Bring a spare tube, tool set, mini pump, chain link tool, and finally a great attitude and big smile. (Please leave kick stand, bike lock and panniers at home.)

A few simple rules of the trail.
The group assembled
Photo by Dan Roitner On arrival at a fork in the trail, make sure bikers behind know which way you are going. Can they see the direction you're turning? Perhaps wait at the junction until they can. Calling out "left" or "right" also helps.

If going slow up a hill, pull over to one side to let the faster riders pass.

Riders that are passing call "on your left" "on your right" when passing.

We make sure no one gets lost. If a rider falls behind, the group will wait and help provide directions to a short cut, or out to your vehicle.

Rides are cancelled if it rains the morning of the ride otherwise it’s on. The ride may change locations if the conditions are poor. Please refer to this website for changes and further details. Want to be on a weekly email list?. For more information, contact us at mtb@tbn.ca.
